The First Thanksgiving...

So here is what we have learned so far:

1. The Pilgrims celebrated the first Thanksgiving because they were thankful for the Indians helping them to plant seeds for food.
2. They ate wild berries, deer, wild turkey, potatoes, pumpkin pie, duck, corn and corn bread.
3. The pilgrims were very Thankful for the food that the Indians helped them grow and hunt because the winter before many pilgrims died from not having enough food and getting sick.
4. The Pilgrims came from England on the Mayflower. They crossed the Atlantic Ocean on the Mayflower in 65 days.
5. We celebrate Thanksgiving to remember for what we are thankful for.

November 16, 2009

We started group time by making a list about what we know about Thanksgiving. Some of the the things on our list were eating corn, chicken, and pumpkin pie. We get together with our families. The first Thanksgiving was with the Indians and Pilgrims. After we made our "very" long list of the things that we know about Thanksgiving we read Thanksgiving Day by Gail Gibbons. Some of the things that we want to know about Thanksgiving are: Why did the Pilgrims and Indians get together for the first Thanksgiving and how did the Indians know what to plant.

H1N1 Shots

The paper work for the H1N1 vaccine is due this Monday, October 26. The vaccine will be given on November 2nd here at school. Please look for more information being sent home. Only students who return the forms will be given the vaccine on November 2nd.

Halloween Party

Don't forget the Halloween Party is this Friday, October 30. The students are allowed to wear there costumes to school.

Lately...

Lately we have been doing a lot of practicing for our performance on Monday night. It has been fun but we are ready to show you what we have created. Mrs. Mitolo has helped us use clay to make leaf necklaces as part of our costumes. We also used marbles to paint leaves fall colors for our headbands. We are the woods for the part in our musical. We also invited the props class over from the high school and they helped us to create trees for the stage. We had a great time painting the woods with them. We are currently working on the words "I" and "see" and have added them to our word wall. We are also working on correctly forming our numbers 1 -5.

Missing...

I think that when I return I might read the book Miss Nelson is Missing to the students. Unfortunately my poor son has the dreaded H1N1 and is recovering slowly. I am hoping to be back by Thursday but I need to be sure that he is back to feeling normal. They have also treated me for it with a round of Tami flu just to be on the safe side. Mrs. Skipper has been subbing for me and I have been in communication with her every day. Please feel free to email me if you have any questions. Thank you for being so understanding about this. I really do hate missing school!!!

Oscar the Grouch in Gym

Mr. Suter has been working on the over hand throw with the students. We have been playing a game where the children have to throw the healthy foods (the colored balls) into Oscar's garbage can. Oscar throws the food back out at the students. I think the vote across the board is "WE LOVE THIS GAME"!!!!! Look who Oscar was the last time we played.

We read Tikki Tikki Tembo retold by Arlene Mosel. Tikki Tikki Tembo-no sa rembo-chari bari ruchi-pip peri pembo fell into a well. His brother Chang ran to get help. Chang had to say "Tikki Tikki Tembo-no sa rembo-chari bari ruchi-pip peri pembo has fallen into the well" so many times because his mother could not hear him over the noise of the river that Tikki Tikki Tembo was at the bottom of the well a very long time. Chang finally ran to get the old man with the ladder. But Tikki had been in the well for so long it took him many days to get better. So from that day on the parents in China name their sons short names so that it does not take so long to say their names. We counted the letters in Tikki's name and he had 50 letters so we decided to graph the letters in our names. We learned that most students in our class have four or five letters in their name. Only one person in our class have eight letters in their name. Two people have nine letters in their name.
