Sending Our Love to Haiti

Beginning February 1st, PVS will be hosting spirit days to honor and celebrate things that we LOVE!! During this time we will also be collecting money to support the people of Haiti. Money that is collected during this fundraiser will be donated to Save the Children. (savethechildren.org) The students learned about this project when they visited the IMC this week. We also took a closer look at earthquakes and where Haiti is located. Students watched a short video which included pictures of the things we are so fortunate to have here in Centerville. In Art, the students will have the opportunity to decorate a "Heart for Haiti". These will be displayed in the PVS lobby where the collection bin will be. The students brainstormed possible spirit day ideas and I have posted them to the class calendar on the right side of this page. Thank you so much for your support!!! The students are excited to help and what a great way to teach compassion for people who have so much less then we do.

Writers Workshop

Writers Workshop is up and running in full swing.  We have finished our first book about things that we like.  The students used a graphic organizer to "organize" their thoughts into four groups of things that they like.  The groups were foods, toys, colors, and animal.  Then the students used their graphic organizer to write their first book.  They practiced spaces and writing the word "like".  The books are stored in their Writer's Workshop folder. Now we are working on our next book.  The students again used a graphic organizer to organize clothes they wear in the snow.  We are working on the words "put", "on", and "my". 

Vechicle Day

I was going back through my camera and found these pictures from vehicle day. Ms. Ostberg had vehicles from around the community brought to the school so the students could learn about them and their drivers. It was very interesting and the students were very excited to be able to get inside of them. They learned a lot of information about the different careers.

Whoops!!

So, I just went back and looked at the blog and I will have to say that some of my postings have not been published. I am not sure where they went. So... I am going to spend the next three days updating this blog. Please accept my apologies.

The First Thanksgiving...

So here is what we have learned so far:

1. The Pilgrims celebrated the first Thanksgiving because they were thankful for the Indians helping them to plant seeds for food.
2. They ate wild berries, deer, wild turkey, potatoes, pumpkin pie, duck, corn and corn bread.
3. The pilgrims were very Thankful for the food that the Indians helped them grow and hunt because the winter before many pilgrims died from not having enough food and getting sick.
4. The Pilgrims came from England on the Mayflower. They crossed the Atlantic Ocean on the Mayflower in 65 days.
5. We celebrate Thanksgiving to remember for what we are thankful for.

We started group time by making a list about what we know about Thanksgiving. Some of the the things on our list were eating corn, chicken, and pumpkin pie. We get together with our families. The first Thanksgiving was with the Indians and Pilgrims. After we made our "very" long list of the things that we know about Thanksgiving we read Thanksgiving Day by Gail Gibbons. Some of the things that we want to know about Thanksgiving are: Why did the Pilgrims and Indians get together for the first Thanksgiving and how did the Indians know what to plant.

H1N1 Shots

The paper work for the H1N1 vaccine is due this Monday, October 26. The vaccine will be given on November 2nd here at school. Please look for more information being sent home. Only students who return the forms will be given the vaccine on November 2nd.
